Evening Presenter
Mark joined the team at One Golden Square starting off on overnights, but he’s now swapped the graveyard shift for evenings, which he relishes! He also presents a show before Rock 'n' Roll Football every Saturday, playing the best music from across the decades and can be heard on our decade stations Absolute Radio 90s and Absolute Radio 00s.
In October 2011, Mark's star rose even further after he was named in The Radio Academy's inaugural '30 Under 30' list, which recognises the industry's brightest young things. It's a massive achievement and thoroughly deserved.
Among Mark's favourite bands are Joy Division, the Manics and the Stone Roses. He claims the best things about his job are that he gets to play awesome music, interview the likes of Brett Anderson and attend fantastic festivals, including the Isle of Wight where he accidentally bumped into Iggy Pop backstage whilst a little bit tipsy!
I'm incredibly lucky to be doing my dream job at Absolute Radio and I never forget that. I'll also never forget the first link on the first show. I nearly had a panic attack!
Mark Crossley (no, not the bloke who used to play in goal for Nottingham Forest,) became obsessed with music at the tender age of nine after discovering his dad's record player. As a huge football and cricket fan, he dreamed of one day becoming a sports reporter, so after finishing school, he moved to the East Midlands to study Broadcast Journalism at Nottingham Trent University.
When he wasn't down the Student Union swigging pints for next to nothing, Mark ran the student radio station Fly FM and in 2008 he picked up Gold for 'Best Male Presenter' at the prestigious Student Radio Awards. It wasn't long before he was snapped up to present on Nottingham's Trent FM before moving to Birmingham to work at BRMB. Mark then presented shows on BBC Radio 1 and Absolute Radio in May 2009, and joined Absolute Radio full time in July 2009.
One of the first gigs he ever went to was to see Richard Ashcroft, who performed an incredible acoustic set at the King Georges Hall in Blackburn. Then, almost a decade later, he was lucky enough to see him do exactly the same up close and personal at One Golden Square, which Mark says was amazing.
Liam Fray from The Courteeners was Mark's first ever live radio interview on student radio. With about ten minutes notice and thanks to Wikipedia, Mark says he just about got by! Suede are probably the coolest band he's interviewed during his time at OGS and Mark remembers that 'hearing Brett and Matt confirm that they were ready to write new songs and that they hoped to bring out a new record in 2012 was an incredibly exciting moment.'
Oh and Mark fulfilled a lifetime ambition when he followed England’s cricketers, quite literally, as he was on the same flight as them on the way out to their successful Ashes series in Australia.
